When people are looking to make major health change it’s easy to become overwhelmed. After all there is so much confusing and conflicting information, it can be difficult to know where to start.
This is where a health coach can make all the difference. Leveraging the expert guidance and personal support of a coach can be the most powerful investment one can make
in his or her health.
Who benefits from health coaching?
Health and Wellness Coaching has developed as an exciting and incredibly successful healthcare profession over the past 30 years in the USA, melding together the best of behaviour change theories, humanistic psychology and life coaching.
It recognises that most individuals have an idea as to what they should be doing to ensure optimum health, having been told what to do by numerous healthcare professionals but still can’t change their habits.
Health coaches use specific communication techniques to empower individuals to take responsibility for their own health and to adopt long term healthy lifestyle choices.
Health and wellness coaching is still an emerging field in Europe but is well recognised internationally as a vital profession within the 21st century healthcare system.
As an overweight and unfit teenager I struggled to feel good about myself. Living at the time in sports mad South Africa added to the expectation that I should be more than I was.
My first forced introduction to a gym did not go well. However a year later I went back to give it another try. I was immediately hooked on how good some exercise made me feel. My life began to change.
And so began my passion for all things health. A healthy way of life is the basis for everything we do, as people, as professionals and as parents.
It was this passion for health which lead me to study the practice of physiotherapy as a way of both expressing this interest and helping people overcome the physical limitations caused by pain, injury or disease.
My aim is always to help my clients feel and move better so they can enjoy the benefits of exercise and improved fitness.
However over the last 10 years through a process of personal discovery, observation and further study it became very clear to me that true health is about so much more.
To get the most out of life we have to consider what and how we eat, how we sleep, how we manage stress, our relationships with ourselves and others as well as our exercise habits and more.
And so my approach began to broaden....
As a Health Coach I am now able to bring together the knowledge and experience gained through undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the allied health sciences, further studies in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and leadership coaching as well as over 20 years of experience working in primary healthcare.
My goal is to help my clients live healthier and happier lives.
Education & background
I offer 1-hour coaching sessions in the following areas according to your needs. The focus may be on one or a number of areas which may overlap, depending on your needs. When coaching you I draw on my experience and techniques used as a physiotherapist as well as knowledge and skills gained through further development in coaching.
Diet & weight management - I will provide you with the most up to date and relevant knowledge in nutrition and exercise for effective and sustained weight loss, without hunger. This will allow you to make informed choices with regards your own diet, understanding how it affects weight management as well as many other health benefits.
Physical fitness - I will guide you through an individualised return to fitness or fitness improvement programme. The emphasis, depending on your needs, will be to safely increase everyday movement, with bouts of low to moderate intensity exercise, occasional higher intensity exercise as well as strengthening.
Pain management - I will use a range of physiotherapy, medical acupuncture, cognitive functional therapy and related techniques to reduce pain symptoms as well as restore movement and function to the affected area of the body. If investigations such as X rays or MRI scans are required, this will be arranged. With your permission I will liaise with your GP regarding supplementary medication if required.
Stress management - I will provide you with techniques and strategies to help manage the stresses and strains of everyday life. The role of diet, exercise and sleep and technology will be emphasised. Cognitive techniques such as mindfulness, meditation and cognitive behavioural therapy may be included depending on your needs.
Emotional wellbeing - how we feel is influenced by our body and our thoughts. I will help you make the connections, allowing you to create a mindful awareness of the body to influence how you feel not only physically but emotionally.
